What the heat has already done this year
Schools shut
France closed roughly 1,350 schools in the June 2025 heatwave. 6% of Italian schools have air conditioning. The fix for a hot classroom is no classroom.
Work banned
More than a dozen Italian regions banned outdoor work from 12:30 to 16:00. The economy clocks off at lunchtime because the buildings cannot stay open.
Wards overheat
About 90% of NHS hospital buildings in England are prone to overheating, passing 30°C when it is 22°C outside. Places built to heal, that cannot cool.
