Europe Is Cooking

The same machine

Europe will pay you thousands to install an air conditioner. As long as you promise to only heat with it.

The "wasteful American air conditioner" and the "green European heat pump" are the same box. One runs the cycle to cool you in summer, the other runs it backwards to heat you in winter. Europe subsidizes one and lectures you about the other.

AC is not a crime.

Many heat pumps can provide cooling, too, which eliminates the need for a separate air conditioner...

One box, two directions

The physics doesn't care what you call it.

It is literally the same machine

A heat pump uses the same vapor-compression cycle and much the same hardware as an air conditioner. The only extra part is a reversing valve. In summer it runs as an AC; in winter it runs backwards. One box. US Department of Energy, 2024

Europe pays thousands for it

Germany covers up to 70% of a heat pump, capped near €21,000. Italy’s Superbonus reimbursed up to 110% of the cost. The EU wants 30 million more installed by 2030. The catch: the subsidy is sold as heating. BMWK / EHPA, 2024

France funds the heating one, not the cooling one

France’s main grant largely excludes air-to-air heat pumps, precisely the reversible units that double as air conditioners, while paying well for the air-to-water kind that mainly heats. The same physics, minus the part that cools you in summer. EHPA, 2025

And it is 300 to 500% efficient

One unit of electricity into a heat pump delivers three to five units of heating or cooling. The "wasteful American AC" Europe scolds is, run in reverse, the green technology Europe is subsidizing. IEA, 2022

The world will go from 1.6 billion air conditioners to 5.6 billion by 2050: about 10 sold every second for thirty years. Europe is choosing to sit it out. IEA, 2018

Stop pretending it's a different thing.

Europe has already decided the heat pump is good, green and worth billions in public money. It is an air conditioner. The only thing left to do is admit it, and turn it on in summer.
